This one's for Nat

One of my sister Natalie's first jobs when she lived here in Michigan was as a waitress at a local restaurant. I don't think she'd ever been a waitress before and she had a hard time at the beginning. One of the main reasons she had trouble working there was because she was a vegetarian and wasn't familiar with what certain things were on the menu and had a hard time describing them or recommending what was good. When a guest complained about her because he ordered Mahi Mahi and she asked how he wanted that cooked she got put on probation (I think) and she came home with the menu and had to memorize it and pass a quiz by her manager in order to keep her job.

Anyway, tonight Todd and I went out to eat and I ordered the black bean burger and the waitress asked me how I wanted the burger cooked? I guess I was kind of surprised, I said, "it's a bean burger, not a real burger." She said, "oh, sorry, I'm new here."

I couldn't help but think of Natalie when that happened, and I thought she'd get a kick out of knowing that she isn't the only one who isn't cut out for waitressing. Of course I didn't find it offensive like the man Natalie served, I just thought it was funny.

When Francie and I ate at Clementine's last week, the waitress asked me the same thing when I ordered the vege burger!

You know what your story of Nat waitressing reminded of? Once Nat was complaining about how stressful her job was, and I tried to commiserate and I told her that my job was sometimes stressful too and she said, "but you're the BOSS, how can your job possibly be stressful?" Um...people die if I screw up.

Yeah, I also got in trouble because I didn't know alcohol either. For goodness sakes, I looked 15, they had no business asking me what kind of wine tasted the best. And I didn't drink and party and come to work hungover the next day, so I was sortof a social outcast amongst that group, and I always got cut last because I was the only one not on the verg of puking. I'm not cut out for that kind of work. What if I just wasn't cut out for work at all...lol. wishful thinking.

The summer I graduated from college, I got a job working at the restaurant at Mystic Seaport. On about my 3rd or 4th day, while service baked stuffed shrimp, I dropped it on someone. The person was very nice but a day or so later, I was let go. Seems that one of the management had a relative that needed a job. I was happy to be out of there. Waitressing was not my cup of tea either and carrying those big trays was difficult for me as I was 5 feet and 100 pounds. Oh, only to be anywhere near a 100 pounds again!!!!

Love Rachel's comment on how people die if she screwed up.

Oh I did a stint as a waitress, don't want to ever go back there.

How are you feeling?

I'd probably do the same thing (only we don't serve burgers!). Waitressing is an interestingly zoned out thing to do, so I could see me doing it for sure.

Thanks for your kind thoughts - I never knew what to say either, the truth is there's not much you can say and that's actually ok too :-) Hope you're feeling well!

Oh, and the short time I worked as a server...

I told a lady she cleaned her plate quicker then my dog.

That sucks that the man got all offended...come on! I never even thought about a vegetarian waitress trying to recommend steak specials! That's must have been a challenge for her! People don't cut waitresses much slack.
